March 7th 2010 Congratulations go to our February competition winner - Tracey Rollings. She did amazing work with her Facebook contacts and was the lucky winner we drew from the Mummy Looks fab "hat" this week. Flowers and chocs are on their way to her as we speak! Posted:2010-03-07 11:33:49 |
February 13th 2010 Gosh! January took forever and now suddenly February is nearly finished! How did that happen...? We have been extremely busy on all your behalfs' with lots of news and changes. New Designs We have just received stock of two new dresses that we think you will really like. Anna Pridanova is a new designer from Eastern Europe who instinctively understands what a breastfeeding mother needs. Her dresses are made from lovely, thicker gauge materials and come with some very flattering details. Gathered shoulders, ribbon ties and perfect lengths, we think you will love her dresses. Check out her unique style here. We have also taken delivery of a lovely new Summer frock from Annee Matthew. Called the Kate Dress it is supremely flattering and feminine and will stand us all in good stead for those Spring weddings and christenings As a result of ongoing requests from our lovely customers we have also started supplying nursing bras. In partnership with bras4mums we have chosen a selective range of pieces that we think work for every breastfeeding situation. From the essential and practical to the sensual and special there are styles to suit every budget and taste. Let us know what you think! Up and Coming Events This week saw an exciting trip out for a member of the Mummy Looks Fab team (we normally keep her shackled to the desk or she wanders off and is eventually found hanging around by the nearest purveyor of Dairy Milk). Sam got invited to attend a photo shoot for a conference happening in October in the Brighton Thistle. Devoted to working mums and especially Mumpreneurs, it will bring together some of the most influential and expert names in the world of developing "Kitchen table businesses". It should be informative, inspiring and above all fun so we can't wait. Sam managed to smile her way through a series of photos with twenty other local mumpreneurs without sneezing, falling of her stool or blowing a single snot bubble. Watch this space for the weblink and more updates - we'd love to see you there! Competitions Finally we announced the winners of our January competition this month. Congratulations go to Anna Trowell and Jennifer Hadley who each won a lovely Giraffe snuggly from the lovely folk at Tish Tash Toys. They are so soft and cute! The giraffes, obviously, not Jennifer and Anna. Although I am sure they are soft and snuggly too.... Anyway. This month's competition couldn't be easier. If you blog, tweet, chatter on forums, e-mail a friend, or even just tell someone about us on facebook, all you need to do is give us a mention, send us a snippet and we will enter you in a draw to win the chance of receiving some lovely flowers and chocolates, courtesy of all of us at Mummy Looks Fab! It will be a belated Valentines Gift in return for a few key strokes! Easy as pie! Speaking of pie, it must be time to feed the Mummy Looks Fab baby and eat some ginger cake. Happy February Breastfeeding from all at Mummy Looks Fab! Posted:2010-03-07 11:33:49 |
January 1st 2010!! Hello everyone and a warm welcome to our small start to 2010.... How are we all? Lovely Christmasses with new additions? Quiet New years Eves? Or did you manage to sneak out? There were a large number of family parties round our way this year but sadly three quarters of the Mummy Looks Fab contingent were too ill to go out....and too contagious - our New Years gift to our friends and family - Botswana Bottom Disease and some green phlegm...lovely. I spent my New Years Eve with Daniel Craig AND my husband. Double Bubble! Obviously Daniel was on the telly and my husband was snoring on the sofa but hey, there are worse ways to say hello to 2KX. So many things have happened to lead us to being able to usher in 2010 that its hard to know where to start....At one point in 2009 we didn't think we would make it through the year, with exchange rates fluctuating like a fiddler's elbow, our suppliers increasing their prices, and the threat of our customers leaving in droves in the name of household economy. The good news is, people still spent 2009 getting married, enjoying family celebrations, supporting small businesses and making great shopping decisions! The fact that we are still here proves that much. On the home front, the Mummy Looks Fab baby is no longer so much of a baby. She has four main words - "Yes", "No", "Why" and "Boobies". Guess which one gets shouted across restaurants repeatedly to the shrieking delight of the Mummy Looks Fab Big Brother....? Still, at least no one is in any doubt that we are still committed to breastfeeding....and just how much she enjoys it. The hard part is when she takes a mouthful of grown up food, spits it out, does cow eyes at me and goes "Boobies?". This means my main four words are "No", "Not-now", "Please-Be-Quiet" and "I-don't-think-Granny-wants-to-do-boobies-lovey." Hey Ho - I'll be sad when she stops asking. Another change on the home front has been a new awakening on our green efforts. We regularly advertise as a business in a magazine called Juno, so reading it with our professional head on it makes a lot of sense. Our customers read it, it focuses on our kind of issues - breastfeeding, attachment parenting, raising healthy children.... however, reading it as a parent over 2009 has been a real eye opener. As a result of losing ourselves in many brilliant articles over the last few months we have now committed, as a family and as a business, to try and make sure we introduce NO new plastics to our lives over 2010. I have started a blog to that effect "365 days to be greener". Its not a new idea but it will be new for us - we are going to try and do one thing every day that improves our green-ness and reduces our waste - principally in the plastics area. So far I am mostly terrified - what do I do about lego? Toilet cleaner? Syrup Sponge cakes from Sainsburys? Clarins? Floss?...Most of our lives are a nightmare of unconditional plastic use and as with all easy-vices, its not until you look at giving something up that you realise how badly you need it! One journalist put it much more plainly than I can... "Waste plastic ends up in the ocean, where it eventually (Over many hundreds of years) breaks down in to microscopic particles that are indestructible and never go away. They enter the food chain, from jellyfish to whales, and then finally come to rest in our livers as we are incapable of processing them - which seems only fair!" The snag is it will not be just our generation that feels the effects of hormone imbalances and tumour inducing levels of plasticity - it will be our children....so join me in the slightly unrealistic, probably doomed to fail, hopelessly optimistic in the face of modern life, do one thing a day plan to reduce our plastics consumption. All input and advice from current plastic reducers MUCH appreciated! And finally, as we wave a final goodbye to the last whispers of 2009, I just want to thank you so much for all your ongoing support. We have received some magical feedback from happy breastfeeding mothers and we look forward to doing the same again in 2010. Watch this space for some great new designs, great new product ranges and hopefully slightly less waste on the planet! Happy New Year!

Dec 2009 Sleigh bells ring - are you listnin'?
Through the lanes, snow is glistnin'
A beautiful night
We're happy tonight
Walking in a winter wonderland....
OR
Head is sore, baby's screamin'
Full of cold, nose is streamin'
Its Saturday night
We won't sleep tonight
Find the Medised and chocolate and gimme a hand....
It has been a trying few weeks in the Mummy Looks Fab HQ. All the children and most of the adults have been ill, recovered slightly and then been even ill-er, which seems intolerably unfair when everything should be exciting and twinkly and sparkly in the run up to Christmas....still, we seem to have got off quite likely compared with many. Swine Flu, chicken pox and botswana bottom disease also seem to be doing the rounds locally so at least we have escaped those....until Christmas Eve no doubt.
Bon Courage to all of you that have been dealing with illness and congratulations to everyone that is breastfeeding through the snot and puke until you get your baby back again - and not the grumbly little urchin who seems to cry all the time and is very, very angry at the world.
So is everybody ready for Christmas...? We certainly aren't...After deciding we would be extra careful this year and only buy the stuff we really needed to, make presents where we could, do e-cards instead of paper ones etc etc...all the good intentions have gone out of the window in the face of a last minute flurry of terror-driven shopping as a result of a few unexpected presents from people we hardly know......O to be a bit less English about it all, just ignore the kindness and forget to reciprocate!
Next year I am putting my foot down and I am going to give the gift of "No Obligation" to everyone except my own children. (Who will remain obligated to me until the day I die as a result of labour).
I will bestow the generous notion of not having to get me anything as a result of me returning the favour with bells on and my ongoing gift will be the idea that I treasure the thought that I will have relieved some stress, saved some money and most importantly, not been a burden of time on my nearest and dearest as a result of NOT having to shop, wrap and give something that I didn't ask for, don't need and will put on E-Bay in January....the thing is, how to let everyone know this without sounding like Scrooge McDuck in October.
Maybe we will just convert to Jehovah instead.....probably much simpler in the long run.
The cliche that Christmas is all about the children is so true and despite of the all the bah-humbug above, I cannot wait to see the look on the Mummy Looks Fab children's faces at 4am on Christmas morning when they see the reindeer footprints on our fireplace and the half eaten carrots on the rug (right next to the half drunk barrel of Pear Cider and the empty six pack of cheese and onion crisps that Santa also insisted on this year :-))
Merry Christmas to everyone enjoying it with children and lets all raise a small pint of sherry to ourselves on Christmas Day for surviving it with our sense of humour intact!

| It's nearly December 2009...brace yourselves!
This is a Winter warmer that we felt utterly compelled to share with you as it is DEE-LISH-IUS. Seriously lovely grub, very easy to make, do a massive batch and freeze - it tastes better with age - we LOVE it and would eat it for breakfast, lunch and supper if no-one was watching.
African Sweet Potato and Spinach Stew
A richly flavoured vegetarian stew based on a traditional African dish
Serves 4-6 (or one hungry breastfeeder)
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 40-45 minutes
Suitable for freezing
205-305 cals per serving
60ml (4tsp) groundnut oil
1 onion, peeled and chopped
2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
10ml (2tsp) grated fresh root ginger
1.25ml (quarter teaspoon) cayenne pepper
15ml (1tbsp) mild or medium curry paste
350g (12oz) peeled sweet potatoes, cubed
300ml (half pint) passata
300ml (half pint) vegetable stock
225g (8oz) button mushrooms
225g (8oz) spinach leaves, roughly shredded
60ml (4 tbsp) peanut butter
30ml (2tbsp) chopped fresh coriander
salt and freshly ground black pepper
chopped coriander to garnish
greek yogurt or soured cream to serve
1. Heat 45ml (3tbsp) oil in a saucepan, add the onion, garlic, ginger and cayenne pepper and fry gently for 10 minutes. Add the curry paste; cook, stirring for 1 minute
2. Add the sweet potatoes, stir to coat with the onion mixture and fry for 3-4 minutes. Add the passata and stock. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are almost tender.
3. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a frying pan, add the mushrooms and stir fry for 4-5 minutes until golden and beginning to release their juices. Add to the potatoes with the shredded spinach and cook for a further 5 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
4. Mix a few spoonfuls of the stew juices with the peanut butter to soften it, then stir back in to the pan. Add the coriander, season with salt and pepper to taste and heat through.
5. Scatter over plenty of coriander and serve at once with loads of buttered rice and the yogurt or soured cream.
Enjoy!!!
